Many of us understand that our consumer society is unsustainable, yet we find ourselves in circumstances that make it nearly impossible not to depend on it. We can do something about it though by reducing waste, preferably by re-using it or converting it into something else of equal or greater value that can be used by others.
Since moving to Brighton in the fall of 2021, we’ve furnished our home and filled our garage with things of value that others are throwing away. We’re grateful for this abundance of free stuff, and at the same time aghast that folks don’t see the embedded costs and energy they are willing to consign to the landfill. Should we really be burying furniture, appliances, and other items that may still have years of useful life or could be repurposed?
Our charity garage sale runs September 29, 30, and October 1, with a special preview the evening of Thursday, September 28, at 41 Elwell Drive.
